Baziel GM van Engelen (MD, PhD, MA) is a neurologist, and professor of neuromuscular disorders at the RUNMC. He has been involved in numerous studies on neuromuscular disorders in myotonic dystrophies, FSH dystrophy, and inflammatory myopathies, including clinical trials in patients with neuromuscular disorders, including DM1.
The Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre (RUNMC) is a leading Dutch institute for medical research. The Department of Neurology is specialized in top-level clinical care and research in neuromuscular disorders such as DM1 for
more than 25 years. This research is embedded in two local research institutes, the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, and the Nijmegen Centre for Evidence-Based Practice. As such, research into the efficacy and safety of
exercise training and cognitive behavioral therapy is on the priority list. The Neurology Department has access to about 1500 new neuromuscular patients per year, and cares for over 300 patients with DM1. The clinical team includes a total of
10 child and adult neurologists, 3 researchers, and 20 PhD students.
