The Expert Centre for Chronic fatigue (ECCF) of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre is a centre of excellence with respect to the study of chronic fatigue. The ECCF has developed cognitive behavioural interventions for chronic fatigue in different disorders and medical conditions. These interventions are aimed at the reduction of fatigue and fatigue related disabilities. Several randomised controlled trials were conducted by the ECCF which showed that these interventions were effective. The ECCF is also actively involved in the implementation of evidence based cognitive-behavioural interventions for chronic fatigue in clinical practice. In recent years the ECCF participated in research into chronic fatigue in neuromuscular disorders. Perpetuating cognitive behavioural factors were identified and interventions were developed.
In OPTIMISTIC the ECCF will develop a cognitive behavioural intervention (CBT) aimed at improving the quality of life of patients with DM1. During CBT patients and their significant others will learn how to change the way they cope with fatigue and a reduced initiative. Both are highly prevalent in DM1 and lead to impairments in daily life. CBT should help patients to reduce the impact of these symptoms on daily life.
